I posted a fic recently that I consider a good one, but it was a lot of things I don’t usually do in a work, like non-linear narration and dealing with sad themes like breakups. My fics usually get about 20 kudos and maybe a couple of comments, but this one only has a few kudos and nobody commented on it. I feel kind of bummed out about it thinking maybe I did something wrong. Maybe I shouldn’t have written it this way or left the sad stuff out of it...
It might just be that you’re usual audience wasn’t prepared for something so different from you. I never write angst, so I think if I suddenly out of nowhere started posting angst when I typically write comedy the people who read my stuff for laughs wouldn’t really know what to do with that.
Remember that people don’t kudos/like/comment/reblog fics because of the quality of the fic. They do so because of the connection they felt to the story. It might just be that your story hasn’t found the right audience yet. *hugs*
Very true - kudos and comments don’t measure the quality of your fic. If you are over-focusing on those, you will not allow yourself to grow as a writer, to experiment with different styles or genres.
It’s always risky to try something new - non-linear narration, write angst if all you write is humour (or vica versa), and sometimes the fandom is used to certain styles or genre. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have written it.
Absolutely. This. Write because you want to write, because it’s a story you have to get out of yourself, because you deserve to grow as a writer and try new things.
My twit is @Rat_flavored Hi I'm Ally and this is a blog where I nerd out about various things including but not limited to anime, video games, cartoons, trees, and tmbg. And sometimes I write things. I'm Ratflavored on ao3.
